Due to policy, the Sport Medicine and Science Council of Saskatchewan can not recommend one specific Sport Medicine &/or Sport Science Consultant.  However, all of the following service providers have met minimum requirements when it comes to their profession.  We do not recommend one over the other, and any one of the following should be able to help you.

  • Must have valid liability insurance
  • Should have teaching/presentation experience
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes and be actively involved in high performance sport science (new applicants must have the ability to demonstrate their knowledge & experience)

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY
CONSULTANTS

Master of Science or Master of Kinesiology or Post Graduate Diploma in Kinesiology Relevant to the Science of Exercise Physiology

  • Must have valid liability insurance
  • Should have teaching/presentation experience
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes and be actively involved in high performance sport science (new applicants must have the ability to demonstrate their knowledge & experience)
  • Should have any of the following certifications; CSCS, CSEP-CEP, ACSM-ET
  • Should be a member in one of the following; NSCA, SKESA, CSEP, ACSM

Metabolic Conditioning: Training the Aerobic and Anaerobic Systems

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
CONSULTANTS

Must have a post-secondary degree in a health science related field

  • Must have valid liability insurance
  • Should have teaching/presentation experience
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes and be actively involved in high performance sport science (new applicants must have the ability to demonstrate their knowledge & experience)
  • Must have Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) or Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology – Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP) designation
  • Should be a member in one of the following; NSCA, SKESA, CSEP, ACSM

  • Must hold a Masters or Doctoral degree with training in both sport science and clinical or counseling psychology
  • Qualified professionals must supervise interns

CONSULTANTS
(Physiotherapists & Athletic Therapists)

Diploma or Certificate of Sport Physiotherapy

  • Must be a member in good standing of Sport Physiotherapy Canada (SPC) and Sport Physiotherapy Saskatchewan (SPS)
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance

Or

Certified Athletic Therapist through CATA

  • Must be a member in good standing of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) and Saskatchewan Athletic Therapy Association (SATA)
  • Must be a certified member of the CATA 
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • must have valid liability insurance

Exception 1: Sport therapists are not required to have their sport designation to provide service in this area. However, priority is always given to those who have their designation.

Exception 2: Student Physiotherapists and Athletic Therapy Candidates are allowed to provide services under certain conditions. Please refer to Medical Coverage Policy Manual for details 

 

SPORT PHYSICIAN
CONSULTANTS

Diploma of Sport Medicine through CASM

  • Must have an unrestricted license in Canada and be actively practicing in Canada
  • The primary care physician must be a member in good standing with the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine (CASM) and the Saskatchewan Academy of Sport Medicine (SASM)
  • Other specialists, certified as FRCPC or FRSCS do not require a CASM diploma
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance

CONSULTANTS

Diploma of Sport Massage Therapy through CSMTA

  • Must be a registered massage therapist
  • Must be a graduate of a 2200-hour curriculum based massage therapy school
  • Must be licensed to practice in the province of Saskatchewan
  • Should be a member of the Canadian Sport Massage Therapists Association (CSMTA)
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance

SPORT CHIROPRACTOR
CONSULTANTS

Fellowship with the CCSS (C)

  • Must be a member in good standing of the College of Chiropractic Sport Sciences (Canada) aka: CCSS(C) and the Saskatchewan College of Chiropractic Sport Sciences
  • Must be licensed in the jurisdiction where they practice
  • Should have experience working with high performance athletes
  • Must have valid liability insurance.

 Medical Coverage at Sporting Events

Exception: Chiropractors are not required to have their sport designation to provide service in this area. However, priority is always given to those who have their designation.

 

NOTE: Exception to Minimum Standards:
In very rare circumstances a service provider will be considered for involvement even if they have not met all the qualifications outlined. A practitioner who has vast experience working with high performance athletes, major games experience and has played a significant leadership role within their field will have the opportunity to contribute upon review by the SMSCS Board of Directors. This practitioner must be seen to be in the process of achieving the required qualifications, or will be granted equivalency by virtue of their standing and experience. In any case the exception must be seen to be in the best interests of the athletes, without compromising the support system standards of the SMSCS.
NOTE: Exceptions to qualifications to provide Drug Education and Doping Control Worskhops:

  1. Doping Control Officer (minimum – have attended a CCES Regional Training Workshop)
  2. SMSCS science or medicine member or consultant (as per the SMSCS current consultant qualifications) who can demonstrate a background (educational or practical experience) in drug education and doping control.  Should also have experience with public speaking or teaching.     

Note: Individuals above must submit a resume &/or cover letter indicating their qualificationsThe SMSCS will review all applications and approve as required by service demand.
